Highlights
More information
Our Rouge River descent runs from marker 12 to marker 24, covering 12 km of calm, mostly shallow river through a rural stretch of the Laurentians. The river winds past farms, cottages and stretches of mixed forest, with several sandy beaches along the way — most are public land — where you can stop, swim and eat lunch. With stops, most groups take around 4h to complete our descent. We recommend a morning departure to make the most of your time on the water. You will leave your car at the starting point of our rental centre. A shuttle will take you to the water and you will descend the river back to your car.
The current is gentle for the full length of this section. Water levels are at their highest in spring and early summer. From late July through September, after dry weather, the river gets shallower and the descent takes longer — factor that in when planning your day.
Our staff will set you up with equipment, help you launch and walk you through the basics before you head out. A shuttle brings you up river to your starting point; you paddle back down to our base where your car is parked.
A paddleboard gives you a different experience. You paddle standing up, which takes more balance and core engagement than a kayak or canoe. It is the most physically demanding of our four options and is not suitable for young children. Open to guests 13 years and older, with a maximum weight of 250 lbs / 113 kg.
Who is this for
Our river descent is a low-intensity outing that fits most fitness levels and ages. The Rouge River is calm on this stretch with no whitewater, and the current does most of the work for you. The physical effort is light to moderate: you set your own pace, stop at beaches when you feel like it and cover the 12 km at a rhythm that works for your group. Paddling for a few hours does work your arms and core, so a basic level of fitness helps. No prior paddling experience is needed. If you like sand, sun, and swimming, this trip is for you.
